Interview with Fabio of Marco Gomme
Milan

This time we “travel” to Milan, Buenos Aires area, to ask Fabio a few questions about his work. Despite his age, he has been working in the heavy transport world for almost 26 years. He manually disassembles and assembles tires, even those of heavy vehicles, which are notoriously

big. Consider that a tire size 445/45R19.5 has significant dimensions and weighs about 65 kg. Starting to work at 13, he has gained experience with both light and heavy vehicles. Fabio loves his job, even though he recognizes its dangers: these are large vehicles that stop in the road, sometimes in the middle of the lane or inside a tunnel, or in parking areas so tight that it makes it difficult to operate. When it comes to vehicles stopping on the highway, the probability of accidents is much higher, at least until the police manage the traffic and close the lane to facilitate the operators. Moreover, his desire to get his hands dirty and his adaptability, necessary to solve various problems with the same efficiency, drive him to do well in this job. The word that, according to him, best describes his work is “speed.” After asking Fabio a few questions about his work experience, we asked him if he thinks that retreaded tires, a much-discussed product lately, are reliable and safe.

The interviewee acknowledged that although a retreaded tire is not a new tire, when one takes care to choose the best casings, the results are more than
satisfactory. Working in an Euromaster center, he has been able to closely follow the hot retreading process of Michelin and the birth of Remix tires, which he considers an excellent product. As for the type of retreading, Fabio definitely prefers hot retreading because statistically, it is the retreaded tire that explodes less.
